NC Biotechnology Research Campus Brownfield

The nationally recognized developer Castle & Cooke selected Hart & Hickman as the environmental consultant to address environmental issues during construction of the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. The project site is the 150-acre former Pillowtex / Fieldcrest Cannon textile mill and was comprised of multiple spinning, dyeing, weaving, and finishing operations, as well as an on-site C&D landfill, multiple boiler houses, and a large wastewater treatment plant. The public-private venture in biotechnology, nutrition, and health represents a $1.5 billion investment by David Murdock. H&H is honored to have been entrusted to support this internationally-recognized endeavor to revitalize the region.

Our services have included overseeing excavation of 80,000 tons of impacted soils and re-placement at a secure on-site location as approved in the Brownfields agreement and at a tremendous cost-savings. Hart & Hickman conducted vapor intrusion sampling and modeling, and designed a vapor barrier to meet ASTM requirements for one of the professional buildings being constructed at the site. The former C&D landfill is being redeveloped to new commercial use, and the main green space/courtyard at the site resides in an area of former contamination. After extensive evaluation by H&H, the State is allowing the facility to use groundwater for irrigation so they do not have to use city water for irrigation, saving a valuable and scarce resource in Kannapolis.
