Project Description

Hart & Hickman personnel manage MGP projects in North Carolina that include both human health and ecological risk assessments to guide cleanup alternatives. Evaluation of vapor intrusion into buildings constructed on top of impacted material was of particular concern. Results at two sites indicated unacceptable exposure risks to on-site workers relative to soil. Importantly, vapor intrusion was not an unacceptable risk for site workers; therefore, no engineering controls were required to ensure acceptable indoor working conditions. Additionally, the ecological risk assessments determined that historic site operations did not impact nearby streams eliminating potential costly cleanup and stream restoration. H&H performed the risk assessments using methods and guidance documents currently recommended by US EPA and DEQ. The Superfund Section’s Special Remediation Branch reviewed and accepted the risk assessment results.
