Project Description


The DEQ Superfund Section, Inactive Hazardous Sites Branch selected Hart & Hickman to implement in-situ enhanced bioremediation for PCE-impacted ground water at a former textile manufacturing facility. The facility’s long operating history resulted in widespread chlorinated solvent impacts to groundwater adjacent to the City of Fayetteville’s water treatment plant and the Cape Fear River. H&H has been DEQ’s partner in communicating assessment and remediation results to the Fayetteville Public Works Commission. To mitigate groundwater impacts, H&H completed an HRC pilot test which demonstrated the effectiveness of enhanced bioremediation as a remedy for chlorinated ethenes (99% reduction in PCE with starting concentrations up to 100,000 µg/l).
Hart & Hickman then designed and implemented the full-scale source area injection remedy which consisted of approximately 400 injection points of HRC-Advanced (aka 3DMe) spaced over a 3-acre area containing PCE concentrations indicative of DNAPL. By modifying the injectant used, increasing the injection spacing, and using multiple direct-push injection rigs, Hart & Hickman was able to implement this large-scale source area remedy in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The full-scale injection resulted in substantial reductions in the extent and magnitude of the PCE source area. Anaerobic conditions favorable for continued degradation of PCE and its daughter products persist in the subsurface more than one year post-injection.
